Goleta Bay Outing - August 7Britt Phillips

August 7 Goleta Bay Outing
High tide: 9.56am
Low tide: 2.29pm

I will try to get there about 8am (leaving 5 Cities around 6.30am) and start fishing by 9am. The moon phase is just three days away from a New Moon so make sure you bring your "excuse towels" with you. Other than the hour around the morning high, this should be a good fishing tide. If you haven't been there the Goleta beach is a typical California comma shape. The point, "Surfers' Point", protects the bay from the waves/wind for the most part.

Google map the Goleta Pier and you will see the road in allows you to go left or right. I will be going right to the west end of the parking lot. The south end where the slew enters the ocean is best during the winter for perch. I boat fish the beachfront from the west end of the parking lot almost to the pier but concentrate on the area in front of the west bath room building (look for the wind mobil). I also fish inside the 12' depth all the way out to the point and work the kelp beds. Lots of fish along this looooooooooong kick. Hour and a half in my Prowler.

I use a 8wt with either of two lines depending on the wind, current, waves and depth. Mostly the Airflo Intermediate but use the Airflo 40+ 3ips when the wind kicks up. I will use different sink rate leaders on both lines to get close (2-3 feet) to the bottom, but NEVER on the bottom. 13-18# Saltwater hard mono tippet.

I use my "trap-chassis" flies in these colors. All white (squid) or black, brown, olive toppings over a off white belly. These color combinations have been successful. Since going to the Trapflies, I have yet to catch a fish on the front hook, but need the front one to keel the fly.

What to bring:
Your boat outfit ( fins, pump, pfd, etc.),
8wt or more outfit with appropriate lines, leaders, tippet and flies.
A Biiiiiiiiiiiiig net or a tool for subduing halibut or others you catch, they have viscious teeth.
A measuring devise, like a tape, halibut minimum is 22", White sea bass is 28".
Also bring a couple of large plastic garbage sacks for the fish and wet things after the fish.
A cooler would keep the caught and harvested fish in good condition for the ride to the kitchen.
Bring the regular stuff like water, sunglasses, sunscreen, fish releaser, oh and extra beers for the outing leader.. ;-))
